Career Transition Tips from Coaching Clients Through Layoffs

Here we are in the middle of fall and don't you know change is not just coming it has arrived! The bonus series that just wrapped up on The Unlock Lab podcast was a beautiful example of how to navigate change in a healthy way. If you missed it, it was a series of six live coaching sessions with my client Kathleen.

At the end of a session with my clients, I often ask them ‘What’s sticking with you now?”, and for this episode I turned that question on myself.

In this latest podcast episode I share the three reminders that stuck with me the most from my journey with Kathleen.

1. Nobody wants to be told what to do. And by the way, you drain so much of your own energy by trying to support folks who aren’t ready or don’t really want it.

2. Our past shapes our patterns today. It’s not water under the bridge if you haven’t found your way through it.

3. There’s healing in sharing our stories out loud. It’s not only a validation of your experience, but also serves as a release.

As much as you may go through some really shitty things in life, the things that bring you to your knees and right at the end of what you think you can handle are endemic to being alive. I don’t think you’re ever broken by what happens, and I don’t think you need to fix anything about yourself. To me there are only new choices for how you move forward to be the person you want to be, and to reach the future you want for yourself.

The conversations with Kathleen were driven by her whole world changing because of a layoff, and maybe you’ve had your own career shake up lately, or know someone who has. These types of transitions are not something we are taught how to manage, or even actively prepare for, but I think more frequent career shake-ups are the new normal. So hopefully you now have some new tools in your belt for how to manage change now or in the future.

Supporting Kathleen on the podcast showed me what lights me up most about The Unlock Lab, which is being with someone on the journey of their own unlock. So you’re going to hear more guests on the podcast who want to work through something they’re struggling with.

If you’re interested in having your own unlock on the podcast, hit reply and let’s talk.

I'm excited to see you in The Unlock Lab this week, and as always I hope that it supports you in just the way you need.

Thank you again to Kathleen for her honesty and generosity, and to you for being here for the whole ride.
