How to Succeed When Starting a New Leadership Role

I was starting a new job almost a year after I left my last one. It was a new industry, new role, new language even. For the first time in a long time, I was going towards something, versus running from something that wasn’t working.
It was a new era for me because day one I knew I was not there to prove anything. I was not there to prove I was worthy of the opportunity. I was committed to not overdoing either. I wanted to end the cycle of giving so much of myself that my career was my whole identity.
I was finally going to start a new job and company in a completely different mindset. And more so, I had a coach help me with this soft landing for the first time ever.
I learned from my past mistakes that how I did things at my old company was not necessarily how I should, or needed to do them at the next. I also trusted the experience that I had was enough, which was in part possible because I knew my boss appreciated my past experience.
This grounded experience and how I moved through the challenges I did face, was how I broke the trend of running from situations that weren’t working, to taking my power back in my career.
I encounter so many people who think the hardest thing is FINDING that next opportunity, or landing that role. But the truth is that the real challenge is in being the version of yourself that you want to be when starting something new. The real challenge is in giving yourself time and grace to come up to speed. The real challenge is in figuring out how to build relationships well from the start.
This is what I talk about on the latest episode of The Unlock Lab. I talk about what it takes to begin a new role in a way that you won’t have to recover from later. And to be honest, I think the advice I share applies to having a new manager, or beginning again in your current role.
If this is landing for you, please like, rate, review, and subscribe wherever you listen. It helps more leaders find this work.
Cheers to what’s next,
